CALL FOR ACTION to ALL WHIDBEY BIKERS
COME TO OAK HARBOR CITY COUNCIL MEETING
TUESDAY – JANUARY 6TH at 6pm to support safe biking
865 SE Barrington Dr. Oak Harbor, Washington MAP
The City of Oak Harbor is planning to review and update their regulations for bikes and biking on their downtown streets at their City Council Meeting tomorrow night.
WIBC’s members have cycled on the sidewalk, of the soon to be new restricted areas, in the past with their families. Our bikers ride on the sidewalk for safety, not tickets.
Blanket restrictions on bicycling in downtown Oak Harbor should be questioned and carefully considered by those who bike, especially those who ride with their kids. Please come to the meeting.
WIBC feels the city should address a safe cycling buffer along Pioneer Way between the shopping district and the marina before they restrict cycling on the sidewalk.

LET’S SPEAK UP
WIBC’s families have traveled the sidewalk many times in the past while riding the Water Front Trail.
KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON
Question: Is bicycling allowed on sidewalks?
Yes. When riding on any sidewalk or crosswalk a bicycle rider has all of the rights and responsibilities of any pedestrian (RCW 46.61.755).
The rider of a bicycle must yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian on a sidewalk or crosswalk (RCW 46.61.261).
Bellevue bicyclists can ride on the sidewalk unless this would “unreasonably inconvenience pedestrians.” [BMC 11.60.070]
