Get ready for some great early season MTB trail riding !  WIBC and Island County Trail Council (ICTC) members have been hard at work maintaining and expanding the Kettles trail system over the last year.

The trails will be well-marked, and given the many ups and downs, roots, rocks and twists and turns this years Mussels in the Kettles will provide a challenge for any age and experience rider. There are three routes on this ride, green, blue and black – allowing all ages and experience riders an opportunity to stay in their comfort zone.

The ride begins at Coupeville Elementary School, where riders who have pre-registered through active.com or by mailing in the registration form and release can pick up their schway bags, bib numbers and event logo mountain bike socks.

Riders can also grab a complementary Whidbey Island Coffee and a Costco supplied granola bar and water before heading out. WIBC will also have an information table set up for more information about WIBC, cycling advocacy and the Kettels/Fort Ebey State Park Trails.

PLUS – we’ll have a limited number of mussel chowder (all made from world-famous Penn Cove mussels) tasting tickets for the Penn Cove Mussel Festival.  HEADS UP – these tickets sell out quickly – so grab them while you’re at the registration area to ensure you get your tasting mug and plan your tasting route time before you ride.

WIBC will have donated prizes for the event.  A tag from each riders bib will be put in a hat for the drawing.

Mussels in the Kettles also offers a FREE Poker Ride.  Riders can collect card at the registration area and at stations located throughout your ride.

In ADDITION – Mussels in the Kettles trail stations will offer homemade cookies, water and assistance for all riders.

Whidbey EMS will be on hand to insure quick response in case anyone gets into any trouble during the ride.

Photographers will be set up along the trail to record the event for rider prosperity and post-race posting on our site.

For riders on the BLACK RUN, there is a Bakerview Cleaner’s token for all riders who complete the difficult ascent without touching their feet to the ground.  In addition cleaners will be entered into a drawing for a bowl of Penn Cove’s world-famous Mussels at Musselfest (note: there’s also a cleaner’s option for the blue run by taking a small detour).

After riders have completed their route, they will return to the Coupeville station to get their final card and have their poker hand recorded.  The basic bib-number, prize drawings will occur at 10am and returning riders with matching bib numbers can claim their prizes. Three prize baskets will be given for the best three poker hands, but poker players will have to wait for prizes.  The poker prizes will be awarded in downtown Coupeville at the WIBC tent at 1:30pm.  Riders must be present to win.  NOTE: Faster riders are welcome to grab a map from our trail guides and explore the Kettles a bit longer.

Full entry riders are entitled to a free beverage at the Penn Cove Shellfish Farm Musselfest Beer Garden and kids can get a free ice cream.  Those riders who have purchased Musselfest tickets will tour the participating town restaurants in search of the best mussel chowder.

At $20 per individual or $35 per family of four (2 adults and 2 children under 16) for those registered before March 1st – this is  one of the least expensive and fun cycling events you’ll ever encounter in 2013.

WIBC sees riders from all over the Pacific Northwest for this event.  Come one come all – LET’S RIDE !
